Ive owned 2 groms and the best you can hope for from a totally stock grom is 55-60 mph I would say and thats being generous, assuming a lightweight rider, with some wind at his back going down a hill or something lol The engine size does not matter too much. When I swaped the engine on my ZX (Longitudal 2.8 I6) I keept it under 3000rpm for the first 10k miles; It is a manual, but this is actually a normal break-in period. Lots of metal ends up in your engine during break in, especially if you are hard on it. I treated my grom almost exactly how the guidelines said and held off on all my mods until the 600 mile break in period. 15k miles later and it runs better than the day I got it. Do not run it hard on break in, that's my advice. With a bomb tested Japanese motor out of the box (like the Grom) there's not too much to worry about under any reasonable scenario. However, in terms of just the motor, variable speed for the first 300 miles (the break-in period in the manual) is a safe bet.
